How to Pronounce “Patek Philippe” and a Look at The Collections.

If you’re thinking about investing in a luxury timepiece, there are many exceptional brands you may want to consider. Though many people struggle to pronounce its name correctly, one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world is Patek Philippe. Whether you’re searching for a luxury watch that’s sporty, dressy, or water-resistant, this brand has something for everyone.

You pronounce Patek Philippe like pah-TEK fill-EEP. This Swiss watch and clock manufacturer was founded in 1839 and is owned by the Stern family in Switzerland. In spite of the fact that pronunciation of the name of this luxury manufacturer can be challenging, it is one of the oldest watch manufacturers in the world and can boast an uninterrupted history of watchmaking since it was founded.

All the Reasons Collectors Love Patek Philippe Watch Collections

Patek Philippe watches are considered one of the most exclusive and prestigious watch brands in the world. Here are a few reasons why collectors love them and keep coming back for more, in spite of their luxury price tag:

Exceptional Design and Craftsmanship

Every watch released by Patek Philippe is assembled by hand, even the ones that include up to 250 or more individual parts. Collectors know that extreme detail goes into the construction of every watch and that no shortcuts are ever made. That means when you purchase a Patek Philippe watch, you get exceptional design and craftsmanship with every watch.

Exclusivity

In spite of the fact that 20 million watches are manufactured every year, only 50,000 new Patek Philippe watches are released to the market annually. When you divide those 50,000 watches between its many collections and styles, that is an extremely low number of watches made for each model, making them very exclusive for collectors.

Investment Value

Every collector wants to feel confident that their investment is going to maintain its value or even become more valuable with time. Because Patek Philippe is an independent, family-owned business, it maintains complete control over the production and distribution of its watches. While this can make the wait list for these watches very long, it also keeps the value high.

Guide to the Patek Philippe Collections

There are 160 different models of watches within the Patek Philippe collections. While this is a relatively small assortment of watches compared to some other brands, it is still a large number of watches to sort through if you are in the market for a luxury watch. The families of watches that are available with Patek Philippe include Nautilus, Twenty~4, Aquanaut, Calatrava, Complications, and Gondolo.

Nautilus

Since Nautilus is the brand’s most popular model of watch, the wait time to obtain one averages eight years. Designed by Gerald Genta in 1974, this was Patek Philippe’s first luxury sports watch. The face of the watch is designed to resemble the porthole on a boat, a nod to the Stern family’s love of yachting. It also features an integrated bracelet.

The 5711 Nautilus is considered by many to be the perfect luxury sports watch, and it’s constructed of steel, making it rarer than the gold versions. If you prefer a diamond watch, the 5719 Time and Date may be more your style, as the timepiece is literally covered in them. If you’re looking for a mid-to-small-sized luxury sports watch, consider the 7118 Series Nautilus.

Twenty~4

This family of watches is known as the exclusive ladies’ watch for the brand. They are typically embellished with diamonds and the only available feature is the time and date.

Aquanaut

The Aquanaut is a more affordable Patek Philippe watch that’s inspired by the Nautilus. Released to the public in 1997 and targeted toward a younger audience, this watch features the octagonal rounded bezel that is characteristic of a Nautilus, but with a rubber strap and sportier look with its bod numerals and mid-century dial engraving. The water-resistant timepiece offers features like dual time or a chronograph.

The most stripped-down watch Patek Philippe offers is in this collection: the 5167 Time and Date. The watch features brushed and polished casework and the bezel is 16-sided. For an extra sporty version, try the 5869 Aquanaut Chronograph. This timepiece has a 60-minute totalizer and features orange hands.

Calatrava

Released to the market in 1932, during the Great Depression, this watch is known as the Bauhaus-inspired classic dress watch. The dress watch, which has evolved and refined over decades, still seems to defy the ages and appear as current as it ever has. The defining characteristics of this timepiece include its round class and classic watchmaking traits. The hobnail bezel is the most popular style in this family of watches.

Complications

This collection of watches includes timepieces that usually have two or three different complications — non-time-telling devices. There are 41 different models of watches in the line and 34 in the Grand Complications category. The defining characteristic for this family of watches is the multiple complications that are useful for everyday life, such as the ability to read not only the time, but also the date. Some features that are available with these watches are a dual timer, an annual and perpetual calendar with moon phases, a world timer, or a chronograph.

Gondolo

The Gondolo family of watches features dress watches that break free from the traditional round shape. These art-deco watches are inspired by Patek Philippe’s golden age and are available in shapes that range from rectangular to tonneau-shaped. Some of the available features of this collection include time and date as well as power reserve. While the collection is not designed exclusively for women, like the Twenty~4 collection, there are a number of watches in the collection that come in smaller, traditionally feminine shapes to appeal to a female audience.
