The Best Watches to Invest In

You can enjoy a quality watch for years, and it can be an excellent investment. Luxury watches often increase in value over time, and selling one of these fine pieces when you decide to cash in on your investment is easy. Vintage watches are usually more expensive, but modern models will also increase in value over time. Here are some of the best watches to invest in.

The Rolex Submariner

The Rolex Submariner was first manufactured in 1953, and it’s part of Rolex’s Oyster Perpetual line. It was the first watch to remain waterproof for up to 100 meters. Rolex designed it for divers, but it’s popular in the office as well. Modern versions are waterproof for up to 300 meters or 1,000 feet, and the Submariner is available in steel, 18-carat yellow gold, or 18-carat white gold. The watch face and bezel are black, green, or blue, and the Chromalight display uses hands and hour marks that glow in the dark.

The Submariner Date model lets you know the date as well. The Submariner also has a mechanical movement that uses the motion from your wrist to wind the watch and provide power. The model number or reference number for the oldest Submariner watch is 6204.

The Patek Phillippe Aquanaut

The Patek Phillipe Aquanaut debuted in 1997, and it has a sleek, modern look. The most common model or reference number is 5167A-001. It’s a stainless steel watch with a black face and a band made from a high-tech, composite material that’s resistant to ultraviolet light, saltwater, and wear. It has a self-winding, mechanical movement, and even brand-new Aquanauts often sell for more than their retail price on the secondhand market. They’re water-resistant to 120 meters.

There’s usually a waiting list for newly manufactured watches. Like the Submariner, the hands glow in the dark. Most models show the date. You can also choose an Aquanaut with local and home time zone settings and day and night indicators. It has two hour hands that can work simultaneously or show the time in two different time zones. White and rose gold Aquanauts with black, white, blue, brown, or green faces are available. You can choose black, white, or pink numbers, and the bands are white, green, black, blue, brown, or pink.

Model 5072R, the rose gold Aquanaut Luce Haute Joailliere, has a retail price of almost six figures. It has a mother-of-pearl face, diamond hour markers, 40 baguette diamonds around the bezel, and 10 more diamonds on the clasp.

The Rolex Daytona

The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is designed for racing, and it was named for the NASCAR Daytona 500 when it debuted in 1963. This popular stock car race takes place every year at the Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. In 2013, this watch also became the official timepiece of Formula 1 racing, and Rolex became a global partner. There’s a long waiting list for retail purchases of this popular timepiece, and some Rolex Cosmograph Daytonas previously owned by celebrities have auctioned for seven-figure prices.

The first Cosmograph Daytona’s reference or model number was 6239, and one of the Cosmograph Daytona’s current reference or model numbers is 116500LN. This model has a self-winding movement that’s similar to many other Rolex watches. It has fewer components than most other models, saving space and making this watch more reliable. The high-tech, black ceramic bezel has a tachymetric scale for measuring average speeds of up to 400 miles or kilometers per hour. It’s nearly scratchproof, corrosion-resistant, and resistant to ultraviolet light.

The numbers on the bezel are covered by a thin layer of platinum or gold for excellent visibility, and Rolex’s specially developed Oystersteel is resistant to corrosion. The white watch face has hour markers with 18-carat gold applique. The hour markers and hands have a glow-in-the-dark Chromalight display, and the central sweep second hand is accurate up to 1/8 second. Two small buttons on the sides let the wearer activate the chronograph or stopwatch function. Screwing down those buttons makes this watch waterproof up to 100 meters or 330 feet.

Many other Cosmograph Daytona colors and styles are available. You can choose rose gold, yellow gold, platinum, or white gold, and the watch face comes in Champagne and Black, Green, Light Blue, Sundust, and Steel. Some models even have dials with material from meteorites.

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak 15202ST.OO.1240ST.01 is a luxury steel sports watch that’s often worth twice its retail price secondhand. If Audemars Piguet decides to discontinue this model, its value could go even higher. It has a stainless steel casing, and the stainless steel bezel and band are textured to look like wood grain. The bezel is octagonal, and eight screws hold it in place. The blue dial has a “Petite Tapisserie” pattern, white gold hour markers, and hands that glow in the dark. This watch is water-resistant at up to 50 meters.

Matching Royal Oak cufflinks are available. You can choose many other Royal Oak models as well. Pick white gold, rose gold, titanium, or black ceramic with a purple, white, brown, blue, or black dial. You can also select a dial that exposes the Royal Oak’s complex mechanism or a bezel covered in amethysts, diamonds, or a rainbow of different gems.

The Rolex GMT MASTER II

People sometimes call this the Pepsi watch because of its distinct bezel. It debuted in 1955 as the GMT Master 1675. New versions of the GMT Master II are still available, and they’re very similar to the original model. The bezel has hour markers, and a 24-hour hand points to them. One side of the bezel is red, and the other side is blue. This watch can keep track of two different time zones, and it has a date display. The hands and the hour marks glow in the dark, and it’s water-resistant at up to 50 meters or 165 feet. The face comes in black, blue, and meteorite, and the bezel is also available in black and blue and brown and blue.
