Why Americash Jewelry and Coin Buyers Loves Oak Park

Oak Park, IL lies on the western border of Chicago. Home to a rich history, beautiful architecture, and a booming small business scene, this is a suburb that might not even strike you as a suburb at first glance. What makes Oak Park so special? Let’s take a look.

A Brief History of Oak Park

Oak Park, IL is positioned atop the shore of an ancient glacial lake called “Lake Chicago.” While there’s little evidence of the lake left, the town remains a reminder of the waters that once filled the area. Originally named Oak Ridge, this land was also once covered completely by oak trees.

Oak Park’s history began in 1835 when Joseph and Betty Kettlestrings came from Yorkshire, England, started a small farm, and eventually opened a tavern for travelers passing through on their way to Chicago. After selling parcels of their land for development, the now growing town took the name “Oak Park” around 1850.

After the Chicago Fire of 1871, there was a period of religious construction and legislation in Oak Park. In fact, the town was dry for about 100 years!

The years up through the 1950s ushered in most of the buildings you see in Oak Park today. It continued to grow as vacant land was bought and developed by home and business owners alike. Now, the town is considered a model community and an “All American City.”

Who put Oak Park on the map?

While Oak Park is a beautiful place in its own right, it does have some famous roots. Not only is this the birthplace of beloved American author Ernest Hemingway, but it also became home to famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright for a period of time.

Ernest Hemingway was born in Oak Park in 1899 and lived here for almost 20 years. Responsible for works of fiction like The Sun Also Rises and The Old Man and the Sea, Ernest Hemingway holds a dear place in Oak Park’s history.

Frank Lloyd Wright certainly left his mark on Oak Park, as well. In fact, there are roughly 30 Frank Lloyd Wright-designed structures in the Oak Park area. The Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio likely stands out above all the rest — this is where some of the most famous buildings in architecture were designed.

What should you do while you’re in Oak Park, IL?
